Between 1885 and 1890 Kashū published six woodblock-printed picture books which included one hundred and four pictures of flowers and (or) birds. This gallery shows the eighteen pictures included in one of these books, entitled Kachō Gaen (Collection of Flowers and Birds) and published in 1885. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Both native and foreign species were chosen for depiction and their Japanese names were given, presumably to ensure that viewers knew what species were being depicted. In 1912 the 104 pictures were reprinted in a three-volume picture book entitled Shūchō Gafu. To see all 104 pictures click here.
